The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Philistine

Meaning

A person who is hostile or indifferent to culture and the arts, or who has no understanding of them.

Origin

The word 'Philistine' springs from the ancient biblical Philistines, a rival people frequently depicted as the uncivilized enemies of the Israelites. Yet, its modern meaning—a person indifferent or hostile to culture—crystallized much later. In 17th-century Germany, university students began using 'Philister' to refer to the townspeople who were often unsympathetic to their academic and artistic pursuits, seeing them as boorish and uncultured. This academic slang then crossed into English, notably popularized by essayist Matthew Arnold in his 1869 work 'Culture and Anarchy,' where he wielded it as a sharp critique of the materialistic and unrefined middle class of Victorian society, solidifying its place as a descriptor for cultural insensitivity.
