The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Parasite

Meaning

An organism that lives in or on another organism, called the host, and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host's expense.

Origin

Imagine ancient Greece, where the word parasitos didn't initially carry a scientific or negative sting. It literally meant 'one who eats beside' or 'one who feeds at another's table,' from para- ('beside') and sitos ('food'). These were often professional guests, welcomed into homes to entertain or offer flattery in exchange for a meal—a kind of social dependent. As the centuries turned, this image of someone living off another's sustenance broadened. When the word eventually made its way into English, it retained that core idea of a hanger-on. By the 17th century, it was clearly applied to organisms that literally fed off a host, cementing its scientific meaning and the more negative, exploitative connotations we recognize today.
