Origin

The word "drongo" originates from the Drongo bird, a family of birds known for their glossy black plumage and often aggressive, territorial behavior. However, the popular Australian slang term for a foolish person has a more specific, much-loved origin story. In the 1920s, a highly anticipated Australian racehorse named Drongo captivated the nation, but for all the wrong reasons. Despite being beautifully bred and frequently finishing second in major races like the Victoria Derby and the AJC Derby, Drongo famously never managed to win. He became synonymous with perpetual failure and a lack of winning ability, leading to his name becoming a popular, affectionate, yet often critical, term for someone who is a bit of a fool or incompetent.
