Dope

Origin

The journey of "dope" from its Dutch roots as "doop," meaning "sauce" or "dip," initially led it to describe thick liquid preparations, and by the 19th century, potent narcotics. This negative connotation with drugs and dullness (as in a "dopey" person) lingered for decades. But then came a powerful linguistic twist: within African American Vernacular English and the burgeoning hip-hop scene of the mid-to-late 20th century, the word was dramatically reappropriated. "Dope" shed its dark past to become a vibrant, energetic descriptor for anything truly excellent, stylish, or groundbreaking, a cultural reclaiming that cemented its iconic status in modern slang.
