Codswallop
Meaning
Codswallop refers to utter nonsense, rubbish, or foolish talk.
Origin
Codswallop first emerged in British slang towards the end of the 19th century, its exact etymology a bit of a delightfully muddled affair itself. One popular, if unproven, tale connects it to a specific brand of beer called "Cod's Wallop." Imagine a particularly subpar brew, perhaps named after a hapless character or simply a pun on "wallop" as a strong drink. If the beer was considered rubbish, then something else equally nonsensical could be labeled "codswallop." Another theory suggests a blending of "cod" (an older verb meaning to trick or hoax) with "wallop" (which could mean a messy mixture or even just general rubbish). Either way, it quickly became a go-to term for dismissing utter nonsense with a bit of British flair.
