The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Chav

Meaning

A derogatory term, primarily used in the UK, for a young person, often from a working-class background, perceived as exhibiting brash behaviour and wearing distinctive, often branded, clothing.

Origin

The term "chav" burst into widespread British use in the early 21st century, though its true origins are thought to be far older, rooted in the Romani language. "Chavo," a Romani word for "boy" or "young man," likely began its journey into English as a simple, neutral descriptor. Over generations, particularly in areas of England with historical Romani communities, this term gradually absorbed negative connotations. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, it had shed its original innocence, transforming into a sharply pejorative label applied to a specific, often caricatured, segment of working-class youth, becoming deeply entangled with class and cultural judgments.

Examples

  • The tabloid newspapers often stereotype young people from council estates as chavs, leading to much public debate.
  • She was tired of the media portraying everyone who wore a tracksuit as a chav, arguing it was a deeply classist label.
