Toot your own horn
Meaning
To boast about one's own achievements or qualities, often in a self-congratulatory or excessive manner.
Origin
In times before mass media and loudspeakers, the arrival of important figures, the start of an event, or a significant announcement was often heralded by a musician literally blowing a horn to gather attention. This loud, unmistakable sound served to announce the presence of someone important. By the 19th century, particularly prominent in American English, this literal act of self-announcement evolved into a vivid metaphor. To 'toot your own horn' became a colorful way to describe someone who loudly and proudly proclaims their own achievements, much like a herald drawing attention to themselves.
