Skeletons in the closet
Meaning
A skeleton in the closet is a shocking or embarrassing secret that someone has kept hidden from others.
Origin
Picture a bustling 19th-century British household, perhaps a doctor's study or a clandestine medical college. At this time, it was not uncommon for professionals to keep actual human skeletons, often acquired through questionable means, for anatomical study. These grim teaching aids would, of course, be tucked away in a cupboard or closet when not in use, out of sight from polite society. The unsettling image of a hidden skeleton, a shocking truth lurking behind a closed door, soon transformed into a chilling metaphor. It conjured the idea of a deeply embarrassing or scandalous secret that a person or family desperately wished to keep concealed, a secret that, if discovered, would rattle the very foundations of their reputation.
