A short period of rest or sleep taken in the early afternoon, often after the midday meal, especially common in warm countries.
Origin
The concept of the siesta traces its roots back to the ancient Roman Empire. The Romans, whose days were divided into twelve hours of daylight counted from sunrise, referred to the middle of the day as the sexta hora, or “sixth hour.” This period, typically falling between noon and 3 PM, coincided with the fiercest heat of the sun in Mediterranean climates. To evade the oppressive warmth and allow for digestion after a meal, it became a practical custom to pause all activities for a period of rest. This tradition, born from a blend of environmental necessity and physical comfort, deeply embedded itself into Spanish culture, eventually spreading to Latin America and other warm regions where the midday rest remains a treasured and enduring ritual.
