The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Show one's true colors

Meaning

To reveal one's real character, intentions, or allegiance, often after a period of pretense.

Origin

During the golden age of sail, naval ships and privateers would often fly false flags, known as "colors," to deceive their adversaries. A pirate vessel might hoist the flag of a friendly nation to lure a merchant ship closer, or a warship might fly an enemy's ensign to approach a fortified harbor undetected. However, before the actual engagement of battle or the boarding of another vessel, maritime law and naval tradition demanded that the ship "show its true colors" by raising its genuine national flag. This dramatic act stripped away the deception, revealing the ship's authentic identity and hostile intent, much like a person eventually reveals their true character.
