Origin
The word "scrub" historically meant to clean vigorously, but by the mid-20th century, it took on a new, precise meaning: to cancel. This particular usage gained widespread recognition through the American space program. When a rocket launch or a critical operation faced technical glitches, unfavorable weather, or any last-minute insurmountable issue, mission control would declare it "scrubbed." It wasn't merely a delay; it was a complete cancellation of that specific attempt, wiping the slate clean for a future, better-planned try. The image is one of erasing something from the schedule, much like literally scrubbing something away.
