Origin

The term "robotics" wasn't coined until the mid-20th century, but its imaginative journey began much earlier with a captivating piece of Czech science fiction. In 1920, playwright Karel Čapek introduced the word "robot" in his groundbreaking play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots). Interestingly, Čapek initially considered "laboři" (from labor), but his brother Josef suggested "roboti," deriving it from the Old Church Slavonic word "robota," which meant "forced labor" or "drudgery." Čapek's play vividly depicted artificial, human-like laborers who eventually rebelled against their creators, firmly planting the concept of intelligent machines in the public consciousness. Decades later, as real-world automated machines began to emerge, the prolific science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, deeply influenced by Čapek's creation, coined the term "robotics" in his 1941 short story "Liar!" He also famously formulated his "Three Laws of Robotics," effectively solidifying the term's place in both fiction and the burgeoning scientific field it now defines.
