Before the digital age, the notion of 'resetting to zero' wasn't just a metaphor—it was a tangible, often mechanical, action. Imagine the whirring gears of early odometers, the rhythmic clicks of a stopwatch, or the intricate counters in factories tracking production. When these devices completed a cycle, reached a limit, or needed to begin anew, a physical button or lever would be pressed, literally rolling the numbers back, digit by digit, until they displayed a pristine string of zeros. This immediate, visual act of clearing the slate, of taking a measurement or process back to its absolute starting point, ingrained the phrase into our technical and then our everyday lexicon.
