Put to bed
Meaning
To complete or finalize a task, project, or piece of work, often implying that it is now finished and settled.
Origin
Imagine the clamor and ink-stained hustle of a traditional printing house. Before a newspaper or book page could roll off the presses, the individual lead type characters had to be meticulously arranged into a 'form'—a rectangular frame. Once the typesetter was certain everything was perfect and ready for printing, this form was carefully locked into place on the press bed. This critical, final act of securing the type, making it ready for production, was known as 'putting it to bed.' The page was complete, settled, and couldn't be altered further, embodying a sense of finality and completion that later stretched beyond the printing world to any task brought to a decisive close.
