The now-ubiquitous internet phrase sprung from an unexpected source: the 2014 video game, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. In a poignant moment during the game's campaign, players attend a character's funeral. Instead of a cinematic cutscene, an on-screen prompt appeared: 'Press F to Pay Respects.' This seemingly earnest attempt at interactive mourning was quickly seized upon by players and observers, who found the direct, somewhat clunky command in such a solemn context to be jarring and unintentionally comical.
