Origin
The vivid image of 'leading by the nose' comes directly from the medieval practice of controlling large, powerful animals like oxen or bears. Handlers would thread a ring through the animal's sensitive nose or attach a rope to it, gaining almost total control with just a slight tug. This method, used for beasts of burden and performing animals, forced the creature into immediate obedience, as its most vulnerable point was held captive. The phrase thus perfectly encapsulates the idea of one person completely dominating another, compelling them to follow without question, just as an animal is led by its sensitive nostrils.
