Keep one's nose clean
Meaning
To avoid trouble, especially with the law or authority, and maintain a good reputation.
Origin
In the brutal world of early 20th-century prize fighting, a boxer's face told a story. A clean, unbroken nose signaled superior defense, skill in dodging punches, and avoidance of the devastating blows that could lead to a knockout. Conversely, a bloody, battered nose was a clear mark of having been severely beaten. This vivid image of maintaining an unblemished physical appearance, free from the literal dirt and damage of a fight, soon stepped out of the boxing ring and into broader use. It became a compelling metaphor for avoiding trouble, staying out of legal entanglements, and keeping one's reputation pristine.
