Jump the gun
Meaning
To act too soon or prematurely, often before the appropriate signal or moment.
Origin
Imagine the electric tension at the starting line of an early 20th-century sprint race. Athletes crouch, muscles coiled, eyes fixed on the starter. The decisive signal to begin the race is the sharp crack of a pistol—the 'gun'. But some overzealous or nervous runners would anticipate the sound, launching themselves forward a split second too early, hoping to gain an illegal head start. This false start was literally 'jumping the gun,' leading to disqualification and frustration. From the competitive world of athletics, the vivid image of an eager runner acting before the signal quickly leaped into general English, becoming a common idiom for any action taken prematurely.
