Origin
The phrase "going the extra mile" hails directly from a powerful lesson in the Bible, specifically Matthew 5:41. During the time of Jesus, the Roman Empire enforced a law, the angareia, which permitted a Roman soldier to compel any civilian to carry his heavy pack or equipment for one Roman mile. This was a resented burden for the conquered populace. When Jesus instructed his followers, "Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two," he was advocating an act of voluntary generosity and compassion beyond the forced requirement. This radical teaching of exceeding what was lawfully demanded evolved from a literal act of burdensome service into a timeless metaphor for exceptional effort and goodwill, embodying the spirit of doing more than expected.
