Origin
While the desire to reduce weapons is ancient, the formal concept and persistent international pursuit of “disarmament” as a policy gained significant traction in the 20th century. The horrors of World War I spurred a global realization that unchecked military build-up was catastrophic. The League of Nations, established in 1919, enshrined disarmament as a core principle, seeking to prevent future conflicts through the systematic reduction of armaments. This pivotal moment cemented the term’s place in diplomatic language, shifting it from an abstract idea to a concrete, albeit challenging, goal for governments worldwide.
