Origin
The concept of "deep space" truly captured the human imagination and scientific focus in the mid-20th century, propelled by the launch of Sputnik and the subsequent space race. Before this era, the universe beyond Earth was simply "space," a largely undifferentiated void. As humanity developed the technology to send probes and eventually humans beyond low Earth orbit and even the moon, a new distinction was needed. "Deep space" emerged to define those immense, challenging distances—regions far past the familiar orbits of planets, where the stars become distant pinpricks and the vastness of the cosmos truly reveals itself. It signified the next frontier, the ultimate journey into the unknown.
