The term "clickbait" emerged with the explosion of the internet and the dawn of online advertising in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. As websites began to rely on page views for revenue, publishers quickly realized that provocative, sensational headlines could dramatically increase traffic. It wasn't about quality content anymore, but about enticing users to click the link, often with hyperbolic titles like "You won't believe what happened next!" or "Doctors hate her!" This strategy, designed purely to 'bait' a 'click', quickly became a pervasive and often irritating feature of the online landscape, giving rise to the now-ubiquitous phrase.
