The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Black sheep

Meaning

A person who is considered an outcast or disreputable member of a family or group.

Origin

For centuries, the literal black sheep in a flock of white sheep was a farmer's bane. Its dark wool, impossible to dye and thus less valuable, made it an economic liability that stood out like a sore thumb. This marked difference, both visually and financially, cemented its reputation as the undesirable anomaly. By the 18th century, this tangible symbol of worthlessness and nonconformity was widely adopted to describe a person who brought discredit or shame to their family or group, an individual whose actions or character diverged unacceptably from the norm, much like the outcast, undyeable animal in the field.

Examples

  • My cousin has always been the black sheep of the family, choosing an unconventional artistic career over the family business.
  • Despite his success, he still feels like the black sheep at reunions because he doesn't conform to their traditional expectations.
