Origin
Imagine the sudden shock of a loud noise or the unexpected sight that makes you flinch. Your eyelids might flutter, your gaze might break—a tiny, involuntary movement. This subtle, rapid motion of the eyelid is what 'to bat' originally described, a verb dating back to the 16th century, akin to a quick flick. It wasn't until the 19th century, however, that the full phrase 'bat an eyelid' solidified, capturing the essence of utter composure. To not even stir this most delicate and often unconscious reaction meant a person was completely unflappable, utterly unmoved by surprise, fear, or joy.
