A tower of strength
Meaning
Someone who provides steadfast emotional or practical support and stability, especially during times of crisis.
Origin
The image of a towering structure providing safety and refuge is ancient, a powerful symbol of defense and steadfastness. This imagery found its way into sacred texts, most notably in the Bible, specifically Proverbs 18:10, which declares, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe." This powerful metaphor of divine protection gradually extended into secular language, transforming the literal fortified structure into a descriptor for a person. By the 16th century, and certainly by the 18th century, referring to an individual as "a tower of strength" became a vivid way to describe someone whose unwavering support, reliability, and emotional resilience made them a refuge for others in times of trouble.
