Origin

Imagine a craftsman, perhaps a carpenter or sculptor, at work on a large piece of wood or stone—the 'block.' As they chisel or cut, small fragments, or 'chips,' break away. These chips, though small, are undeniably composed of the exact same material as the original block, sharing its grain, color, and inherent qualities. This vivid, literal image, signifying that a part reflects the whole, was quickly adopted to describe human lineage. By the 17th century, the phrase had seamlessly transitioned from the workshop into everyday language, becoming a simple yet powerful metaphor for a child who visibly inherited the distinctive traits or temperament of their parent.
