The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

A cakewalk

Meaning

Something that is extremely easy to accomplish or achieve.

Origin

The cakewalk was a dance popularized in minstrel shows of the 19th century, originating from African American slaves who would often mock their white masters' elaborate ballroom dances. They would strut and prance with exaggerated elegance, often competing for a cake as a prize, hence the name "cakewalk." The dance was performed with such a flamboyant and effortless style that winning the prize, or performing the dance itself, appeared incredibly easy. This playful, ironic display of skill and mockery gave birth to the phrase, embedding the idea of something easily accomplished into our language.
